I Swam In Bat Poop

This past adventure day a group of us were taken to some Bat Caves on an island near by. I was really unsure if I wanted to go or stay back at base. Some YWAM students did the bat caves a couple weeks ago and came back with a great rating but some parts were a little scary:

The caves are filled with water at least to your hip and at times up to your shoulders. The water has bat poop in it. There is one point where it’s an abyss and no one really knows how deep the water is. There are sections where you have to turn sideways to get through and grab onto the slimy walls covered in poop so you don’t stumble. But you must be careful where you put your hands on those walls because there’s scorpions and tarantulas. And I can’t forget the bats that are flying literally inches from your head the whole time!

After hearing all that you can guess why I was a little hesitant, but I went anyway.

The caves were pitch black and had zero outside light coming in. Luckily we had head lamps but even with those we couldn’t see too much. We were walking through the caves and at several points stopped to turn off our lights and just stand in the pitch black.

I couldn’t see my hand an inch from my face. We stood in the darkness. It felt empty, dead, and desperately lacking life.

When we came out of the desolate, dark caves I was taken back by the lush greenery and beauty of nature. I was taken back by all the light and beauty. I just stood and stared. I couldn’t wrap my mind around how vibrant and luminous it was. That one minute ago I was in a cave and had no sight.

And then I was taken back by the fact that people walk in such darkness everyday. They don’t know the light (John 8:12). They don’t know that you don’t have to walk in darkness, praise God! They don’t know that we are called out of the darkness and into the light (1 Peter 2:9).

The Lord wants you in the light! He wants to redeem and restore your life and story. He wants to bring you into his holiness, into the light.

  1. What a great illustration: standing in the darkness, in poop, contrasted with all the greenery, light, and beauty of being out of the darkness. Thank God that we are called to the light!!! We can’t wait to see you in 5 days!! Woohoo!!! Love ya!!

  2. So bat poop in bat caves… don’t worry about me, I’ll just be quietly curling into a ball in the corner and dying from his thought…..

that being said, this is a post I need to read over and over. The spiritual wisdom in here about dark and light hit me like a truck and guess what (try to at least act surprised here), made me cry. Your growth in Christ is incredible and I can’t wait to sit with you and hear the depths of it!!

  3. You were brave to go into a cave occupied by bats. Not many people have had that experience. Well, your missionary trip has almost ended and I am anxious for you to return to Denver. Then – your next adventure (college) begins. Love, grandma and grandpa
